Why should YOU become a VITA Volunteer?

Because YOU can help hard working families in the community get back the tax credits they deserve, such as Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), and help improve financial stability in the community by offering free tax preparation services! As a VITA volunteer you will also learn valuable skills.

Who: Individuals with experience or educational background in accounting, finance, or other professional fields.

When: January 25, 2027 - April 15, 2027

Where: Bernard Brown Community Center, 629 N. Market Street, Frederick, MD 21701

We Provide:

  • Free tax law training & e-file software training
  • Administrative support
  • A great volunteer experience
  • Internship credit for eligible students

No experience needed. We will train you!

Greeter
  • Welcome tax clients and oversee the sign-in process
  • Conduct initial screening of tax clients
  • Must successfully complete volunteer training (online, open-book exam for Standards of Conduct and VITA Intake/Interview)
Tax Preparer
  • Meet with clients to gather information
  • Review client documentation
  • Prepare and file tax returns
  • Review accuracy of returns
  • Must successfully complete IRS-certification tax preparation and site training (20-30 hours online & classroom with online, open-book exam)

Recommended Commitment: At least 4 hours once a week for 12 weeks, but we are flexible with your schedule. Those interested in a VITA internship will complete the required hours for internship credit.

No experience needed. We will train you!

The CASH Campaign of Maryland hosts the Maryland Community Fellows Program where site placement is available at the United Way of Frederick County. The Maryland Community Fellows Program is a paid internship opportunity to provide free tax preparation and financial capability services to low-income Marylanders.

Fellows will become certified VITA Site Coordinators and Advanced Tax Preparers. Fellows will complete training for approximately 8 hours a week in the Fall, and approximately 20 hours a week in the Spring tax season. Fellows complete a maximum of 400 hours throughout the duration of the Fellowship (100 hours in the Fall; 300 hours in the Spring).
