For Marlene Young, creating positive change in Frederick County isn’t just a professional mission—it’s deeply personal. A proud native of Frederick County, educated at Middletown High School and Hood College, Marlene has spent her entire career giving back to the community that shaped her. “I have a deep-seated, place-based love for this community,” she shares. “It’s been deeply meaningful, gratifying, and fulfilling to be part of so many initiatives that lift people to a higher place and enrich our community.”
As President of Delaplaine Foundation, Marlene has championed an extraordinary range of programs and services that touch the lives of thousands. From providing transportation access for working families through the United Way’s Ride United Network, to supporting the life-saving mobile care provided by Mission of Mercy, to helping feed, shelter, and clothe ALICE households through organizations like Frederick Rescue Mission and Blessings in a Backpack—Marlene’s impact is felt far and wide.
A passionate supporter of the Unity Campaign, Marlene has long believed in the power of collective generosity to make meaningful change. “The Unity Campaign is Frederick County’s largest comprehensive fundraising initiative. I’m proud to be a supporter of the Incentive Fund that helps match donations and expand our collective reach. In 2025, we raised a record-breaking $658,000 for our community—proof of what’s possible when we all come together.”
Marlene’s dedication also extends to lasting investments in Frederick’s future. She and her husband made a lead gift to establish the Michael S. and Marlene B. Young Data Driven Frederick Center at Hood College—an essential resource that helps nonprofits, businesses, and governments make informed, data-based decisions for the region.
Receiving the Changemaker Award is a meaningful milestone for Marlene—a moment to reflect on a life dedicated to service and purpose. “I have always believed we are not here to see how important we can become, but what we can do to lift up and enrich the lives of others,” she says. “To be recognized with this award affirms that this calling has made a lasting impact—and for that, I am truly honored and deeply grateful.”
Marlene Young exemplifies what it means to be a changemaker: compassionate, visionary, and unwavering in her commitment to building a stronger, more connected Frederick County.
