For Leslie, receiving a vehicle through United Way of Frederick County’s Pathway to Transportation program means more than having a reliable way to get from one place to another. It means renewed hope, greater opportunity, and a chance to build a more stable future for her family.

After totaling her vehicle in October 2025 while driving home from an overnight shift, Leslie and her family faced mounting challenges. Without reliable transportation, she was forced to limit her work hours, making it increasingly difficult to secure stable housing for herself and her children. The loss of transportation also disrupted her daughter’s schooling and kept her from participating in extracurricular activities she once loved.

Despite these challenges, Leslie has remained determined to create a better future for her family. She dreams of providing her children with a stable home, helping her daughter return to the activities she enjoys, and ensuring her children have the opportunities they need to thrive.

A reliable vehicle is an important step toward making those dreams possible. With transportation, Leslie can work more hours, increase her income, and begin saving toward stable housing for her family.

But the moment Leslie received her vehicle held a meaning that went far beyond transportation.

The vehicle was donated to Second Chances Garage by Miesha, who had received that very same car nearly a decade ago during a difficult chapter in her own life. Now, having moved forward from that season, Miesha chose to donate the vehicle back so it could help someone else find their footing.

When Leslie and Miesha met at the vehicle presentation, they discovered a shared understanding of what it means to face hardship and hold on to hope. Their connection was immediate and deeply moving. They hugged, cried, and prayed together as Leslie prepared to begin this new chapter.

What began as one person’s lifeline had become another family’s opportunity for a fresh start.

Through the partnership between United Way of Frederick County and Second Chances Garage, the Pathway to Transportation program helps individuals and families overcome transportation barriers that can stand between them and employment, housing stability, and opportunity. For ALICE households, those who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed, reliable transportation can be a critical step toward financial security.

For Leslie and her family, this vehicle represents the chance to move forward, rebuild, and create a more stable future. And for Miesha, who once relied on the same car to help her through a difficult time, donating it was an opportunity to turn her own journey into hope for someone else.

Sometimes, a second chance is more than a vehicle. It is a reminder that difficult seasons do not last forever, that people can lift one another up, and that hope can help a family find its way forward.
