Taking His Destiny Into His Own Hands: Divad’s Journey to Independence

For Divad, receiving a vehicle through United Way of Frederick County’s Pathway to Transportation program means more than having a reliable way to get from place to place. It means freedom, new opportunities, and the ability to take his destiny into his own hands.

Before receiving his vehicle, Divad relied on ridesharing services, public transportation, and walking to get where he needed to go. These options were often expensive, inefficient, and limiting. Without reliable transportation, spending time with his daughter required additional coordination with family, and pursuing employment opportunities farther from home was difficult.

Divad is focused on rebuilding his financial stability and creating a stronger future for himself and his family. Reliable transportation would allow him to expand his employment options, increase his income, and pay down debt more quickly. Just as importantly, it would give him greater independence and more freedom to be present for his daughter.

While working toward a vehicle of his own, Divad connected with Rides for Good, a nonprofit that provided transportation assistance. That support helped him navigate the challenges of getting where he needed to go while he worked toward a longer-term solution.

Then, in a remarkable full-circle moment, Divad received a vehicle through Second Chances Garage, donated by none other than Wayne Dorsey, founder and CEO of Rides for Good.

Wayne attended Divad’s vehicle presentation and reflected on how meaningful it was to see Divad’s journey come full circle. After using Rides for Good to help meet his transportation needs, Divad was now receiving a vehicle that would offer a new level of freedom and independence.

During the presentation, Divad shared how difficult it had been at times to depend on other people for transportation. Now, with a vehicle of his own, he can make his own plans, pursue opportunities, and take greater control of his future.

This moment was also a powerful example of what can happen when community organizations work together. United Way of Frederick County, Rides for Good, and Second Chances Garage each played a role in helping Divad overcome his transportation barriers. Through their combined efforts, what once felt like a significant obstacle became an opportunity to move forward.

United Way’s Pathway to Transportation program helps individuals overcome transportation challenges that can stand between them and employment, financial security, and independence. When paired with the support of community partners like Rides for Good and Second Chances Garage, the program demonstrates how collaboration can create meaningful, lasting change.

For Divad, the keys to his new vehicle represent more than transportation. They represent the freedom to pursue new employment opportunities, spend more time with his daughter, and continue building the life he envisions.

Sometimes, taking the next step forward means no longer having to depend on someone else to get there.

Now, Divad has the opportunity to take his destiny into his own hands.
