For Desiree, the decision to pursue homeownership was driven by her love for her children and a desire for something more than just a place to live. She wanted stability, protection, and the confidence that comes with building a strong future. Above all, she dreamed of a forever home, a place where her children could feel safe, grounded, and proud to say, “this is our casita. A home that was truly theirs, where memories could be made, and long-term roots could be planted.

Ready to turn that dream into reality, Desiree joined United Way’s Pathway to Homeownership program on a fast-track route. She came in motivated, eager to learn, and fully committed to the process. Desiree gained a new understanding of the opportunities available to first-time homebuyers. One of the most impactful lessons was learning how credit works, not just in purchasing a home, but in everyday life, from credit cards to car loans.

Balancing work, parenting, homework, and program sessions was not easy. Desiree had to learn how to prioritize herself, something that can be especially challenging as a parent. With the support of her Budget Coach, the process became manageable. His flexibility, encouragement, and genuine investment in her success made a lasting impression. Desiree never felt alone; she felt supported every step of the way.

One of the most meaningful moments came during the closing process. With tight timelines, endless paperwork, and constant follow-ups, closing can feel overwhelming for any buyer. Desiree remembers feeling anxious about providing the necessary documentation from the Pathway program while juggling everything else in her life. That stress disappeared with one phone call. Joyce, United Way of Frederick County's Director of Operations, reached out to reassure her that everything had already been handled. Desiree simply needed to complete her coursework and meet the program requirements.

Today, Desiree is the proud homeowner of what her friends and family lovingly call the “Full House” home. Homeownership has brought her family a sense of confidence, stability, and peace that’s hard to put into words. The house is already filled with laughter, memories, and hope for the future. It represents growth, perseverance, and a dream realized.

As the first Hispanic graduate of the Pathway to Homeownership program, Desiree feels especially inspired to help others like her see what’s possible. Information about homeownership is not always widely shared in many communities, and the process can feel out of reach, but Desiree’s journey proves it is achievable. With dedication, education, and the right support, homeownership is 100% attainable.

Her advice to others is simple: trust the process. It takes hard work, but it is worth it. For Desiree and her children, Pathway to Homeownership didn’t just lead to a house; it led to a future built on stability, confidence, and pride.
