Support from Frederick County neighbors like you has provided a lifeline to our struggling neighbors during the COVID-19 economic hardships. For many people in Frederick County things are better, but not for our most vulnerable households. For them, the barriers to financial stability have only grown.

At United Way of Frederick County, we recognize the toll these barriers have taken on our ALICE households. Our COVID-19 Impact Survey showed that many of them had to go to food pantries for the first time just to put food on the table or go without critical necessities like health care visits just to stay afloat.

Before COVID-19, more than 1 in 3 households in Frederick County could not afford basic necessities like housing, transportation, and child care. They were one unexpected expense away from spiraling into poverty. Today, the urgency to provide life-changing programs for these households has increased as they face more challenges.

We ask you to join us as we BREAK DOWN BARRIERS facing ALICE households in our community. Many ALICE households on the Pathway to Financial Stability have been derailed, through no fault of their own, but you can make a difference!

ALICE Report

In Frederick County, MD, 35,291 households (37%) cannot afford basic needs such as housing, transportation, child care, food, transportation, health care and technology.  Despite overall improvement in the federal poverty level, employment rates and gain in median income, the economic recovery in Frederick County, like that in the rest of Maryland, had not reached all families before the deleterious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  A growing number of families now face challenges from low wages, reduced work hours, depleted savings and increasing costs.

The ALICE Report for Frederick County provides and in-depth look at Frederick County and the population called ALICE - Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.  ALICE households have incomes above the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), but struggle to afford basic household necessities.

COVID Emergency Relief

Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis

In March 2020, as Frederick County was gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Frederick County sprang into action to alleviate suffering in our community. We immediately established the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Campaign because we knew who would be affected most— the hardworking households who struggle every day to make ends meet.

The Prosperity Center: Pathways to Financial Stability
