Highlights from United Way of Frederick County's Volunteer Recognition/Campaign Celebration and Annual Meeting
Accomplishments Presented to the Community
June 12th, 2007
FREDERICK, MARYLAND-United Way of Frederick County held its Volunteer Recognition/Campaign Celebration and Annual Meeting on June 12 at Dutch's Daughter Restaurant to recognize its volunteers, celebrate the most successful campaign in the organization's history and share the state of the organization with the community. Additionally, the organization announced its 2007-08 slate of officers and recognized retiring, returning and new board members.
Additionally, the event served as a formal welcome for Bill Kantz, UWFC's new president and CEO, who has been with the organization for six weeks. Mr. Kantz invited guests to celebrate the start of a new era for United Way of Frederick County, "an era that will build upon the strong tradition of caring and move that tradition to a higher level," he said.
Eric J. Struntz, UWFC 2006-07 chairman of the board, and Frederick L. Ridgway, Jr., 2006-07 campaign chair, reflected on the organization's successes over the past 12 months. Highlights included the following:
- The 2006 campaign, which officially wrapped in April 2007, raised $1,612,600.
- The newly established local Tocqueville Society has grown to include eight members, each having made a minimum $10,000 donation.
- For a fourth consecutive year, UWFC was able to produce a local campaign video, due to generous underwriting from The Frederick News-Post, Randall Family, LLC.
- The Fifth Annual Golf Classic was held in the fall of 2006, was a sold out event and netted more than $24,000 toward the 2006 campaign total.
- Under the leadership of Allocations Committee Chairman Richard Marshall, UWFC's 22 partner agencies were organized into seven panels comprised of 71 volunteers who made site visits to partner agencies, met with agency staff, analyzed budgets and reviewed services delivered and program outcomes. The purpose is to determine how to create the best strategic investments in those partner agencies, allocating scarce dollars where they can provide the best impact on the community.
- The Financial Management Committee, chaired by Treasurer Barbara Cline-Roman, and 2nd Vice-Chair Fred Ridgway continued to balance the use of UWFC's financial resources for short-term community needs, as well as for long-term community needs, assuring the continued survival of the organization. This committee also continues to monitor UWFC's operational expenses, so that the most dollars possible can be invested in programs in the community.
- The Strategic Planning Subcommittee of the Executive Committee was instrumental in creating and conducting a Community Needs Assessment, which was a survey distributed to help assess the local United Way's direction for the years to come. "As we look forward, we want the public to keep in mind that conducting this assessment is only the first of many steps. We will need many partners working together to think strategically about how to best address the unmet needs in our community," Mr. Struntz said.
Following his report, Mr. Struntz presented Fred Ridgway with the ceremonial chairman's gavel, formally passing leadership to his successor, with the term beginning July 1, 2007.
Mr. Ridgway presented awards to 36 companies with workplace campaigns that marked a 10 percent increase or higher from last year's campaign.
Mr. Struntz then addressed the audience to acknowledge the significance of volunteer contributions to the organization. He presented H. Mark Alexander with the Dedicated Service Award acknowledging more than 30 years of service to United Way of Frederick County by participating on its Citizen's Review Panel.
Mr. Struntz then presented five special recognition awards that were established through the Dr. and Mrs. Henry P. Laughlin Special Awards Trust Fund. Frederick Community College received the Annual Distinguished College Gold Medal Award for worthy contributions to United Way of Frederick County. The Laughlin Annual Distinguished Citizen Award was presented to Theodore M. Luck, Frederick County Public Schools, for significant and praiseworthy contributions to UWFC by a public official. Gale Houses, Inc. was the recipient of the Annual Distinguished Achievement Gold Medal Award, which is presented to the organizational recipient that has distinguished themselves and their use of UWFC funds. UWFC board member Carolyn B. True was presented with the Distinguished Director Gold Medal Award and the UWFC staff received the Distinguished Administrator Award.
A local, volunteer-managed organization, United Way of Frederick County invests in community impact by supporting programs that assist children and families, provide emergency services, offer health education and serve those with disabilities through its 22 partner agencies.
