What's in the News?! Our Readers Say Thanks
April 26th, 2007

On behalf of the Board of Directors of United Way of Frederick County, we extend profound thanks to April and Michael Jensen, owners of the new Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop on Carroll Creek, for naming United Way of Frederick County as the beneficiary of its April 17 Free Cone Day event.

That day, more than 2,000 guests came through the Ben & Jerry's doors to indulge in their favorite flavors "on the house." In conjunction with Free Cone Day, visitors had the opportunity to participate in several raffles to benefit United Way of Frederick County. The raffle buckets featured coveted Ben & Jerry's apparel and goodies donated by the shop. The event raised $730 for United Way of Frederick County that will help address the needs of our friends and neighbors.

Additionally, we'd like to thank Bonefish Grill for donating a generous gift certificate for the raffle and the volunteers from BB&T who staffed the raffle tables throughout the day: Kim Butts, George Chaney, Alan Mullendore, Carla Ridenour, Chris Rolle and Roland Talton.

Special thanks to Old World Troubadours, John DuRant, Sr. and John DuRant, Jr. for providing entertainment enjoyed by all ages!

It takes a lot of hard work to scoop out that much ice cream so we want to be sure to thank all the employees of Ben & Jerry's as well as the celebrity scoopers who helped out that day: Ric Adams, Jayne Bongard, Tony Checcia, Pat and Gerry Hanberry, Karlys Kline, Alderman Kip Koontz, George Lewis, Tom Lynch, Patrick McFadden, Myron Randall, Alderman Paul Smith and Dave Weigand.

We are thrilled to welcome Ben & Jerry's to the neighborhood and are grateful for the partnership we have established. As with any donation to UWFC, Ben & Jerry's has made a significant investment in the Frederick community because United Way of Frederick County is focused on supporting children and families, providing emergency services, offering health education and serving those with disabilities. We appreciate this generous support.
