Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day Hits Frederick April 29 Event to Benefit United Way of Frederick County
April 22nd, 2007
FREDERICK, MARYLAND—On Tuesday, April 29 from noon until 8 p.m. participating Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops around the world will be hosting Ben & Jerry’s Annual Free Cone Day. Originally developed as a way to thank customers for their support, Ben & Jerry’s is celebrating 30 years of successful scooping by giving away free ice cream.
On Free Cone Day, ice cream lovers can enjoy a free cup or cone of their favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor. Last year Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops gave away more than 1 million free scoops worldwide. Fans can get in line as many times as they wish to receive their complimentary scoop.
Locally, free scoops will be doled out throughout the day by local Frederick “celebrities” at the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop located at 50 Carroll Creek Way. Scooping celebrities include Mayor Jeff Holtzinger; Aldermen Kip Koontz, Donna Kuzemchak Ramsburg, Alan Imhoff and Marcia Hall; Delegate Rick Weldon, United Way of Frederick County; Fred Ridgway, UWFC Chairman of the Board; Kim Dine; Jayne Bongard, M & T Bank; Myron and Will Randall, The Frederick News-Post; Laurie Boyer, Frederick County Office of Economic Development; Dave Gunning and Rona Mensah, KEY 103; David Miller, Rotary Club of Frederick; Tony Checcia, Frederick Land Company; John Fiesler, Tourism Council of Frederick County; Harby Tran, Smart Company Magazine; Kara Norman and Joanna Lubbes, Downtown Frederick Partnership; Heather Gramm, City of Frederick Department of Economic Development; Tom Kleinhanzl, Frederick Memorial Hospital; Larry Hill, Hill Services; Dr. Ron Volpe, Hood College; Dr. George Lewis, Catoctin Aqueduct Restoration Fund, Inc.; Bonnie Walters, Frederick High School; Patrick McFadden, Frederick Flight Center; Mark Friis, Rogers Consulting, Inc.; The Reverend Gerry Hanberry, United Church of Christ; Pat Hanberry, Mental Health Association of Frederick County; Ric Adams, Frederick County Chamber of Commerce; David Bufter, SAIC; Dave Weigand, Specialized Engineering; Karlys Kline; Tom Lynch, Miles & Stockbridge, P.C.; and Shawn Dewees and Tom Gorsline, Frederick Magazine.
The local Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop opened in the South Market Center along Carroll Creek in February 2007 and served more than 2,000 free scoops during last year’s Free Cone Day. “We are thrilled to partner with United Way of Frederick County for Free Cone Day on April 29,” said owner April Jensen. “Again this year, we expect that several thousand people will attend this celebration and we see this as a wonderful opportunity to hold several raffles featuring buckets filled with Ben & Jerry’s coveted apparel and other goodies with all the proceeds going directly to United Way of Frederick County.”
Performing again this year will be Old World Troubadours John DuRant and John DuRant, Jr. They will entertain the crowd from 6 until 8 p.m. Visitors can help support United Way of Frederick County by purchasing their CD, from which $5 of each sale will be donated to the organization.
A local, volunteer-managed organization, United Way of Frederick County invests in community impact by supporting programs that assist children and families, provide emergency services, offer health education and serve those with disabilities through its 23 partner agencies.
