What's in the News?! Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day Hits Frederick April 17th Event to Benefit United Way of Frederick County
April 10nd, 2007

FREDERICK, MARYLAND-On Tuesday, April 17th from noon until 8 p.m. participating Ben & Jerry's scoop shops around the world will be hosting Ben & Jerry's Annual Free Cone Day. Originally developed as a way to thank customers for their support, Ben & Jerry's is celebrating 29 years of successful scooping by giving away free ice cream.

On Free Cone Day, ice cream lovers can enjoy a free cup or cone of their favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor. Last year Ben & Jerry's scoop shops gave away more than 1 million free scoops worldwide. Fans can get in line as many times as they wish to receive their complimentary scoop, which will be served throughout the day by local Frederick "celebrities." Scooping celebrities include Aldermen Kip Koontz, Alan Imhoff, Marcia Hall and Paul Smith; Fred Ridgway, UWFC Campaign Chair, Smith Barney; Jayne Bongard, M&T Bank; Myron Randall, The Frederick News-Post; The Reverend Gerry Hanberry, United Church of Christ; Pat Hanberry, Mental Health Association of Frederick County; Ric Adams, Frederick County Chamber of Commerce; Dave Weigand, Specialized Engineering; Karlys Kline, Structural Systems and Tom Lynch, Miles & Stockbridge, P.C.

The local Ben & Jerry's scoop shop opened in the South Market Center along Carroll Creek in February 2007. Owners April and Michael Jensen are excited about their first experience with Free Cone Day and wanted to help the local community at the same time. "We are thrilled to partner with United Way of Frederick County for Free Scoop Day on April 17," said Ms. Jensen. "We expect several thousand people through our doors that day and we see this as a wonderful opportunity to hold several raffles featuring buckets filled with Ben & Jerry's coveted apparel and other goodies with all the proceeds going directly to United Way of Frederick County."

A local, volunteer-managed organization, United Way of Frederick County invests in community impact by supporting programs that assist children and families, provide emergency services, offer health education and serve those with disabilities through its 22 partner agencies.
