Founding members help society launch in Frederick County
February 23rd, 2007

FREDERICK, MARYLAND-United Way of Frederick County recently announced that Bettie and George B. Delaplaine, Jr. will serve as founding chairpersons of its newly established Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

The national United Way Tocqueville Society was founded more than 20 years ago in order to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of United Way's most generous and community-minded investors. Frederick's local society was formally founded in January 2007. The Society is one of the world's most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving peoples' lives and strengthening communities. "They are the visionaries. They are the champions. They are the people who are passionate about making the world a better place. And they're starting right where they live," said UWFC chairman of the board Eric J. Struntz.

Named in honor of the 19th century French aristocrat, Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville, who wrote extensively about the spirit of volunteerism in America, the United Way Tocqueville Society recognizes those who donate $10,000 or more annually to United Way of Frederick County or other participating United Ways across the country.

Alexis de Tocqueville traveled throughout the young nation and garnered a perceptive view of American society. His observations, readings and discussions with eminent Americans formed the basis of "Democracy in America," a detailed study of American society and politics, published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840.

During the current UWFC campaign year, seven donors have contributed a total of $104,500 through the Tocqueville Society. All local Alexis de Tocqueville Society donors will be invited to join their peers from around the world at the United Way Leaders Weekend at the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, April 26-28, 2007. Tocqueville members will share ideas for growing membership and gift levels in local communities, and find out how United Way leaders are making an impact worldwide. To make a donation or find out more about the Alexis de Tocqueville Society please contact UWFC at 301-663-4231 or E-mail us.
