Letter to the Editor

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I am compelled to address the Frederick community to ask them to open their hearts to help their neighbors in need. There is no question that strong communities are built from within, and every resident makes up the heart of a caring community. You see, community isn't something you live in.it's something that lives in you.
It's important to remember that disasters don't just happen to other people in faraway places. We have "everyday disasters" right here at home that affect your friends, your neighbors-maybe even you and your family. With your support, United Way of Frederick County ensures through its 22 partner agencies that basic, local services will be there for all of us-whenever we need them.
The 2006-07 United Way of Frederick County campaign is just past the mid-way point and we have much work to do before we can meet this year's goal of raising $1.7 million to invest in the Frederick community. We are pleased to announce that, to date, the campaign has raised $1.1 million. The official end of the campaign is April 30 so there is definitely time to achieve our goal.
In a few days, every household in Frederick will be receiving an appeal by mail to help support your local United Way's efforts. Please take a moment to open the envelope, then open your heart.
Your contribution matters because mentally and physically disabled adults need a place where they can go to work. Families devastated by a house fire need immediate assistance until they can gather their resources. Area youth need structured after-school and summer programs and there are homeless families who otherwise would have nowhere to go.
Only one organization can address these comprehensive community needs. That's United Way of Frederick County. And we're asking for your support. Thank you.
